One thing I love about the weekends are my post-lunch naps (also called 40 winks!) on the sofa with the Saturday edition of the Wiesbadener Kurier – yes a REAL newspaper! I also enjoy the monthly Spotlight and Business Spotlight magazines which, for those who don’t know, are very interesting magazines for German learners of English.
Now my 96-year old Dad says I am really old-fashioned as he flicks through his online Guardian on his iPad 😊 but he eagerly picked up the Business Spotlight I took over for him to read last week. I asked him why he liked it and he said it kept him up-to-date with what is going on in the business world, and liked the fact that the new vocabulary, which he had come across in his Guardian but did not know, is explained so well!
We both agreed that the magazines are no longer “stodgy” (dull) but quite vibrant in their new shorter monthly editions with shorter and snappier articles (which include a vocabulary list at the end) and more informal language.
Believe me, Spotlight have not asked me to write this, I thought I must let you know that it is a great resource to help you improve your English and keep you up-to-date with what is going on in the English-speaking world. I believe you can subscribe for one month free-of-charge.
But going back to my all important naps, I’ll never forget the time the CEO of a company I was teaching for in Frankfurt took a nap on the soft carpet of the meeting room while I was out for lunch! Now that gave me a shock when I returned!
